William Erskine Bartlett (born April 18, 1830 in Springfield , Massachusetts , † around 1900 ) was an American- British inventor .

Life

Bartlett emigrated to Scotland from the United States in 1870. He received his first patent for the fastening of solid rubber tires in 1872 as deputy manager of the North British Rubber Company in Edinburgh . In July 1889, as a result of Dunlop's invention , Bartlett developed a removable clincher, which is held on the rim by the internal pressure of the hose. The U.S. patent for a cheek strip was registered on October 18, 1890. Together with the invention of Charles Kingston Welch (clincher tire ), both of which were acquired by Dunlop, this is considered a prerequisite for today's tire .
