Dunlop Welch clincher tire on drop center rim

Charles Kingston Welch (* 1861 in Tottenham ; † December 7, 1929 in Coventry ) was a British inventor . Although Welch is relatively unknown, his invention of the clincher tire with tube and drop center rim (1890) is seen as more crucial to the economic success of the tire industry than John Boyd Dunlop's (1888) invention of the pneumatic tire: British patent no. 14563 dated September 16, 1890. Welch's patent described a clincher tire with a tube that was mounted on a drop center rim. Welch used a normal U-rim of a solid rubber tire for his construction - which he perfected in a few days . Dunlop's Pneumatic Tire Company under Du Cros also acquired William Erskine Bartlett's patent on a bead strip. Both patents were crucial because, in contrast to Dunlop's tires, these were not glued to the rim, but instead could be dismantled with a jacket and tube. In 1894, 89.5 percent of all new bicycles were fitted with these pneumatic tires.
