Christian Wägli

Christian Wägli (born December 22, 1934 in Muri bei Bern ; † June 17, 2019 near Bern ) was a Swiss athlete . He was considered one of the best Swiss athletes of the 1950s and 1960s.

Athletic career

Christian Wägli, originally a worker sportsman ( Satus ), was mainly active on short and medium distances. He started for the ATV Gümligen . Due to his lack of speed, he always pushed the pace early. In 1958 he was voted Swiss Sportsman of the Year . His career climax in 1960 when he took part in the Olympic Games . When the nations marched in at the opening ceremony, he led the Swiss delegation as the flag bearer . In the 800-meter run and in the 4-by-400-meter relay , he won an Olympic diploma (places five and six respectively). At the end of the season he ended his career and concentrated on his work in the finance department of Wander AG .
