Ernst Koch (* 1755 in Mainz ; † February 2, 1825 in Vienna ) was a German builder who worked in Vienna.

Life

When Koch came to Vienna cannot be precisely determined. In any case, in 1788 he made a design for the facade of the Michaelerkirche and appears on the guild boards of the master builders' guild from 1791. Subsequently, he worked as a court architect in the Imperial and Royal General Court Building Directorate until his death, but also worked privately. Ernst Koch was married to Anna Katharina Gillinger, with whom he had five children. His son Josef Koch was also a master builder in Vienna.

Ernst Koch was a representative of classicism . His new facades of the Michaelerkirche and the Theresianum influenced his contemporaries. Koch built mainly residential buildings in which he further developed the earlier sober Josephine style with his concentration on the decoration only around the windows insofar as the entire facade gains in importance for him. Koch was one of the most important builders in Vienna around 1800.
