The Drachengasse located on the 1st Viennese district of Inner City . It is named after a house sign to the golden dragon .
history
The Drachengasse has already been identified in 1437, but at that time it had no name of its own. The name Drachengässl appears for the first time in 1656 . The house owner Martin Drach (1629–1683), with whom the house sign to the golden dragon , which already existed in 1701, lived at No. 2 . In 1786 people spoke of the Drachengassel and since 1821 the current form of Drachengasse has been common.
Location and characteristics
The Drachengasse runs away from the meat market in a south-westerly direction as a cul-de-sac bordered by the Heiligenkreuzerhof . It is only the width of a sidewalk and is therefore a pedestrian zone . The narrow Drachengasse separates a classicist and a historicist building. There are small theaters in both buildings, the entrances of which are on Drachengasse.
building
No. 1, 3: Hotel Post
The late historical building was erected in 1902 by Carl Caufal in neo-baroque forms. A plaque commemorates the founding of the Association of Commercial Employees in 1892. The Czech House , as it was originally called, was the seat of the following Czech institutions: Národní rada česká (Czech National Council), Slovanská beseda (The Slavic Conversation), Pokrok (Progress - a theater association ), Lumír (a choral society), Sokolská župa dolnorakouská (Lower Austrian Sokolgau), Akademický spolek (academic association). In the basement on the side of Drachengasse there was a concert hall belonging to the hotel, which was adapted in 1959 by Josef Czurda for the Vienna Chamber Opera , which has been located here since 1961. The foyers, the staircase and the auditorium are secessionist and have rich stucco decorations. The rectangular auditorium has a mirror vault and a balcony-like gallery running all around.
The Vienna Chamber Opera was founded in 1954 by Hans Gabor and, after initial years of traveling, moved into the house in Drachengasse in 1961. She has specialized in opera rarities that are not on any other repertoire, but also performs contemporary works and old Viennese Singspiele. The rock opera Carmen negra was commissioned . Important singers like Walter Berry or Eberhard Waechter emerged from here. The auditorium can hold more than 300 visitors.
The building is located at the main address Fleischmarkt 24.
No. 2: Theater in Drachengasse
The late Classicist rental house was built by Ernest Koch for Simon Georg Freiherr von Sina in 1823–1825 . In its place were previously five smaller buildings, including the House of the Golden Dragon . The house with two inner courtyards is freestanding on three sides between Drachengasse, Fleischmarkt and Wolfengasse. On the side of Drachengasse, Emmy Werner founded the Drachengasse theater in 1982 .
The building is located at the main address Fleischmarkt 20-22 and is a listed building .
