Gianni Minervini (born October 21, 1966 in Rome ) is a former Italian swimmer . He had specialized in breaststroke and medley swimming .

Career

Minervini won his first national title in the 100 meter chest and bronze in the 200 meters at the Italian championships in 1984. A little later, despite his only 17 years, he was part of the Italian team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles . Over the 100 meter chest he reached ninth place, with the 4 × 100 meter relay he was eliminated in the second run after the team was disqualified.

At the Italian Championships in 1985 he again won the 100-meter breaststroke title. In addition, Minervini and the team secured the silver medals in the tier relay. A short time later he was part of the Italian selection at the 1985 European Swimming Championships in Sofia . He just missed a medal as fourth over 100 meters chest, but was later able to win bronze in the individual relay relay. As a student, he took part in the 1985 Summer Universiade in Kobe , Japan , where he secured silver for the 100 meters. On August 20, 1985, in Pesaro , he set a new European record for this discipline with 1: 02.61 minutes, which lasted for a year. A year later at the Italian Championships in 1986 he won the title in the 100 meters chest for the third time in a row and again the silver medal with the relay. In Madrid he succeeded in the 1986 World Swimming Championships , he also won silver over the 100 meters.

At the Mediterranean Games in 1987 in Latakia , Minervini won the gold medal in both the individual and the individual relay. In the same year he had to admit defeat over the 100 meters chest at the Italian Championships for the first time in his career and won only bronze. With the tier tier it was again only enough for silver. At the European Swimming Championships in Strasbourg in 1987 , he won bronze over the 100 meter chest. With the tier relay, Minervini was fourth, just barely without another medal.

In Seoul , Minervini missed his first Olympic medal again at the 1988 Summer Olympics when he finished seventh over 100 meters. With the tier relay, he was eliminated in the third run and was only on a weak 15th place in the end.

At the first European Sprint Swimming Championships in Gelsenkirchen in 1991 , he celebrated winning the bronze medal with the 50 meter chest and the 4 × 50 meter relay relay. At the European Swimming Championships in Athens in 1991 and at the 1991 World Swimming Championships in Perth , Australia , Minervini was also able to win bronze over the 100 meters again.

Minervini's last major competition was the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . Over the 100 meter chest he was in tenth place together with Stéphane Vossart and Hans Dersch . As in 1988, he failed in the tier relay again in the third run and ended up only in 11th place.

After his active career, Minervini stayed true to swimming. He was part of the organizing committee at the 2009 World Swimming Championships in his hometown of Rome.
