history

Gate and entrance to the Melker Hof

The Melk Abbey in front of Werdertor may have owned it as early as 1252. What is certain is that Andre Dietram's house in Vienna was bought by the Abbey in 1438. This building is the core of the later Melker Hof. In 1510 the house is called Melker Hof for the first time and a chapel is built which was consecrated to Saints Leopold and Koloman . In 1631 the neighboring house of Andre Hans Räß, a Viennese citizen who also owned the Zum Roten Hahn tavern in Roßau, was included in the Melker Hof. The adaptation brought the addition of a larger and a smaller tower. The last extension took place in 1770, when a house of the baker Michael Asperl, which was already on the Mölker Bastei, was purchased. From all these objects, the master builder Josef Gerl created the sizable Melker Hof in its current size by 1774, whereby he also changed the chapel in the Rococo style. At the same time, there was a low extension on Mölker Steig 4. Ernst Koch carried out changes from 1813 to 1814. On July 30, 1862, a fire broke out and destroyed the roof structure. During the renovation afterwards, Franz Schlirholz added a fourth floor to the building complex. On September 10, 1944, the Melker Hof was badly hit by bombs . Today there is a well-known Gexi Tostmann traditional costume shop in the northwest corner . Until 1992, the businesswoman had the basement rooms restored and incorporated into her business, in which an Advent and Christmas bazaar is held.

Melker Stiftskeller

The well-known Melker Stiftskeller is located in the building. It is one of the oldest wine cellars in Vienna. In 1629 the Melk Abbey received permission from the municipality of Vienna to import 40 loads of wine from the Abbey’s own vineyards into the Abbey Court every year. In 1722 the monastery was also exempt from the beverage tax. The groin-vaulted one-pillar room dates from the time it was built.

In the back wing there is a remarkable sala terrena with a ceiling painting by Johann Baptist Wenzel Bergl depicting putti with a basket of flowers. In the adjoining dining room there is the so-called Schwind-Stüberl with wall paintings by Günter Frank and Marianne Cornelius, which show Franz Schubert and Moritz von Schwind with muses.
