Gesine Maria "Gexi" Tostmann (born August 11, 1942 in Vöcklabruck , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian entrepreneur.

Professional training

Gexi Tostmann is the daughter of Jochen Tostmann (1908–1980) from Hamburg and Marlen Tostmann (née Fischer, 1915–2017) from Linz. She finished her studies in folklore (European ethnology) and history in 1967 with the dissertation Interaction of costume and fashion in Austria. Influences of tradition in contemporary clothing . She then joined her parents' company Tostmann Trachten , which she has been managing partner since 1968, from 2002 together with her daughter Anna Tostmann (* 1975). The company, which specializes in the classic dirndl , employs around 100 people at its headquarters in Seewalchen and in Vienna .

In 1987, following a constitutional lawsuit brought by Gexi Tostmann (who saw the law violating the fundamental right to free professional practice) , the shop closing law was amended (release of Saturday afternoon sales in Austria) and renamed ( opening hours law ), but this did not bring about the deletion of the law hoped for by Tostmann .

Together with her daughter, she initiated the Emilie Flöge Prize and the Konrad Mautner Prize , which have been awarded every two years since 2006 to so-called “traditional costume ambassadors” (previous winners: Anja Kruse , Erwin Pröll , Christiane Underberg , Miguel Herz -Kestranek , Martina Pühringer , the married couple Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler ).

Since 2000 she has been an advisory board member of the Lower Austrian Folk Culture and has also been in charge of the Lower Austrian costume collection of the Lower Austrian Heimatwerk since 2000 .

other projects

Through personal contacts with Frankfurt and Tübingen folklore colleagues from the late 1960s and early 1970s, she became familiar with the philosophy of the 68s . She was actively involved in the early peace and anti-nuclear movement , against Zwentendorf and Wackersdorf , for the Hainburger Au and for an unconditional basic income .

In 1980 she and friends founded the Mölkerstiege cultural association (focus on folklore and ecology). In the cellar vaults of the Viennese shop she organized numerous exhibitions (including witches, healers, women 1981, turban, cloth and tambourine 1983, gypsies. Between romanticization and persecution 1984/85, headscarf cultures - a piece of fabric in past and present 2007).

In 1986 she made rooms for her election office available to the Green Party candidate for the Federal Presidency, Freda Meissner-Blau , as well as to the Green Movement (until it entered parliament as a Green Alternative at the end of 1986).

She was one of the initiators of numerous citizens' initiatives, including Rettet den Heldenplatz (1987/88).
