The BhW Niederösterreich ( BhW NÖ ) is a Lower Austrian institution for general adult education .

History of the club

The BhW NÖ was founded in 1946 as a Lower Austrian Heimatwerk . The focus was initially on the practical and scientifically motivated cultivation of traditions and customs as well as the promotion of artistic activities. In the country devastated and divided by the Second World War , a “new national consciousness” was to develop, which also implied a critical and innovation-conscious handling of tradition. The Lower Austrian Heimatwerk thus also fulfilled an Austrian-wide educational policy mandate - the Heimatwerk brand is legally protected in Austria and can only be run by organizations that meet the objectives of the Heimatwerk idea.

As early as the 1950s, activities were expanded to include all areas of general adult education and community-oriented projects, which is reflected not least in the name changes to Lower Austria Education and Heimatwerk in 1953 and Education and Heimatwerk Lower Austria in 1997.

The establishment of local educational institutions and the establishment of district offices in all provincial quarters of Lower Austria proceeded rapidly. This created the framework for a needs-based and customer-oriented adult education organization.

Since January 1, 2015, BhW Niederösterreich GmbH has been a subsidiary of Kultur.Region.Niederösterreich GmbH . The second GmbH shareholder is the BhW Niederösterreich association.
