Andreas Kronthaler (born January 26, 1966 in Fügen (Zillertal) , Tyrol ) is an Austrian fashion designer . Together with his wife and fashion designer Vivienne Westwood , he designs “unconventional” fashion collections. He has been showing his own collections since the early 1990s under the name Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood and from 2016 under the fashion brand of the same name (formerly: Vivienne Westwood Gold Label ).

Life

Kronthaler is a son of the blacksmith Franz Kronthaler and his wife Maria-Mara, who worked as an antique dealer. His brother Martin later became a farmer in a joint venture in Reith im Alpbachtal . Kronthaler's second brother, brother Thomas, was a master blacksmith and locksmith and died unexpectedly in 1999. At the age of 14 he went to boarding school in Graz, graduated from high school and then trained as a goldsmith at the Graz School of Applied Arts . During his apprenticeship, he experimented with various media such as making sculptures, installations and sewing textiles. To finance his education, he designed clothes and sold them to local fashion stores.

After graduating, he enrolled in the industrial design course at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and studied with Carl Auböck . He also financed his studies through fashion designs. Kronthaler lost interest in product design and interrupted his studies with temporary work. In addition, he began to change clothes for friends and to sew. He was very careful how the clothes were put together. He has this thoroughness in common with Westwood, who also separated the seams of the respective clothing at the beginning of her tailoring in order to find out the cut. In 1988 he applied for the entrance examination for the fashion design course and was accepted.

In 1989 Kronthaler met Vivienne Westwood. She had accepted a teaching position at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and Kronthaler began studying fashion in the same semester. After an introduction to Westwood's fashion history, Kronthaler created his first fashion collection, inspired by the Renaissance . Westwood was enthusiastic about his talent and the collection and invited him to their studio in Battersea, London . In 1989 Kronthaler moved to London as Westwood's assistant. She worked on the so-called Sun Wheel dresses, which later became part of her collection. After a few months they became lovers and he moved from the studio to Vivienne Westwood.

In 1992 Kronthaler and Westwood married. She says of her husband that he is "the most talented person I have ever met." Together, the couple support many initiatives in the areas of environmental protection, peace and human rights. You visit Austria every year to go on vacation, for fashion projects etc. a. with the traditional costume manufacturer Tostmann and for inspiration. In 2010 they both received the Emilie Flöge Prize from Gexi Tostmann   as “Ambassadors of traditional costume”.
