New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic 2014

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic 2014 was the 74th New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic and took place on January 1, 2014 at the Wiener Musikverein . It was conducted for the second time by Daniel Barenboim , who previously conducted the concert in 2009.

particularities

The program was dedicated in particular to the commemoration of the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The conductor Daniel Barenboim is co-founder of the Palestinian-Israeli West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and has received numerous prizes for his efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, including the Haviva Reik Peace Prize in 2004, the Hessian Peace Prize in 2006 and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and in 2010 the Westphalian Peace Prize and the Otto Hahn Peace Medal in gold. In 2007 he was appointed UN Ambassador for Peace, and in 2011 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Barenboim dedicated the first piece, the Helenen Quadrille , to his wife, the pianist Jelena Dmitrijewna Bashkirowa . Jelena is a variant of the female given name Helena or Helene. Bashkirova and their son, the violinist Michael Barenboim , were in the audience. In an interview, Daniel Barenboim stated that he hesitated when asked to conduct the concert again, because the second concert usually could not develop the same uniqueness as the first.

The waltz Friedenspalmen by Josef Strauss referred to the battle of Königgrätz . This was composed in autumn 1866, shortly after the war defeat of the Danube monarchy. The Carolinen Gallop was intended to allude to Barenboim as a bridge builder between West and East - the Gallop is named after the Carolinen Bridge over the Vienna River that existed at the time of Strauss . Barenboim's commitment in the Middle East was to be recognized with the Egyptian March .

For the Waltz Stories from the Vienna Woods , recordings from Klosterneuburg Abbey were shown, which - by Leopold III. Founded in 1114 - celebrated its 900 year anniversary.

On the occasion of his 150th birthday , the Philharmoniker honored the composer Richard Strauss with the moonlight music from the opera Capriccio . In Josef Strauss' Dynamiden Waltz the motif appears which Richard Strauss used 46 years later for the ox waltz in the Rosenkavalier .

The two polkas Neckerei and Schabernack were performed by Josef Strauss for the first time as part of a New Year's concert .

During the encores, Barenboim decided not to conduct the Radetzky March , which was dedicated to Field Marshal Josef Wenzel Radetzky von Radetz and premiered on August 31, 1848 . Radetzky was best known for his military successes in 1848 and 1849 against the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont and was victorious in several battles. Instead, Barenboim shook hands with every musician.

The Philharmonic created the Twitter - Hashtag prosit2014 around New Year greetings to the whole world to send.

Floral decorations

The flower arrangement was provided for the first time by the Vienna Philharmonic. Until then, from 1980 this was a gift from the Italian city of Sanremo .

ballet

In September 2013, the dance performances of the Vienna State Ballet were recorded in the Liechtenstein City Palace . As at its premiere in 2013, Brit Ashley Page was responsible for the choreography. They danced to the waltz Die Romantiker by Joseph Lanner and the Polka Pizzicati by Leo Delibes. The Harlequin -women in plaid were by Vivienne Westwood designed.

In 2014, the professional dancers Kathrin Menzinger and Vadim Garbuzov, known to a wide audience from the ORF program Dancing Stars, danced live in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein to the waltz on the beautiful blue Danube according to their own choreography . They too appeared in Vivienne Westwood costumes.
