The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic 2020 was the 80th New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic and took place on January 1, 2020 at the Wiener Musikverein . Andris Nelsons stood at the conductor's podium for the first time .

The ballet performances of the Vienna State Ballet were staged by director Michael Beyer in summer 2019, the Spanish choreographer José Carlos Martínez was responsible for the choreography for the first time . The costumes in the 50s look came from the British costume designer Emma Ryott , who designed the costumes for a New Year's concert for the second time since 2016 .

Nine works were performed for the first time as part of a New Year's concert by the Vienna Philharmonic: on the occasion of Ludwig van Beethoven's 250th birthday, some of the twelve contretances, the overture to Die Landstreicher by Carl Michael Ziehrer , the Liebesgrüße waltz, the Liechtenstein march, the Cupid Polka as well as the polkas Knall and Fall and Eisblume by Josef Strauss . Further premieres were the gavotte by Josef Hellmesberger (son) and the postillon gallop by Hans Christian Lumbye with a trumpet solo interlude by the conductor.

The break film for the New Year's Concert 2020, entitled Beethoven's vortex of leaves , was designed by Georg Riha . In it, ensembles of the Vienna Philharmonic make music at Beethoven's places of residence and work in Baden , Gneixendorf ( Krems an der Donau ) and Vienna.

Filming locations included the Beethoven Temple in the Baden spa gardens, the Beethoven House in Baden , the Eroica House in Vienna, the House of the Heiligenstadt Testament , Wasserhof Palace and the Beethoven House Gneixendorf (Trautigerhof, Kneifelhaus) in Gneixendorf, the Eroica Hall in the Lobkowitz Palace in Vienna , the Beethoven House in Ballgasse , the Beethoven Monument on Beethovenplatz , the Theater an der Wien and the State Hall of the Austrian National Library .
