Matthias Schorn (born November 3, 1982 in Bad Vigaun ) is an Austrian clarinetist from the Salzburg region .

career

He received his first clarinet lessons at the age of eight, and three years later he became a student at the Hallein Music School. As a 16-year-old he moved to the capital Vienna, where he studied clarinet at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Johann Hindler from 1999 , and he attended several masterclasses a . a. in Vienna and Salzburg.

Matthias Schorn's first engagement as a clarinetist was in 2004 and 2005 with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra . From 2005 to 2007 he played as first solo clarinetist with the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin . In 2007 he won the audition for the position as principal clarinetist with the Munich Philharmonic , but shortly afterwards he also won another audition at the Vienna State Opera / Vienna Philharmonic , where he has been principal clarinetist since September 2007. In addition, he is regularly invited as a substitute for the solo clarinet by the Berlin Philharmonic , the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , the Bavarian State Orchestra Munich , the Camerata Salzburg and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra .

In addition to his orchestral work and numerous appearances as a soloist at various national and international festivals and concerts, Matthias Schorn is also involved in other musical fields. In 2003 he co-founded the MaChlast brass band , a folk music group made up of 14 young orchestral musicians and music teachers, who set themselves the goal of "realizing their own, very special Austrian idea of ​​folk and brass music". In numerous guest performances in Austria , Germany , the Netherlands , Slovakia , Italy and Switzerland as well as radio and television recordings, MaChlast has already been able to present itself successfully and has since released three CDs.

In 2004 Matthias Schorn also founded the Trio Marc Chagall , in which he devotes himself to chamber music together with the two young Austrian musicians Maria Grün on the cello and Nikolaus Wagner on the piano. In 2005 the trio Marc Chagall released Spread Your Wings, their first CD with works by Michail Glinka , Joseph Dorfman and Johannes Brahms . In search of his own ideal of music, he also founded his own PalmKlang festival in Oberalm (Salzburg).

Furthermore, Matthias Schorn has been teaching clarinet at the Conservatory Vienna Private University since 2007 and holds master classes at important institutions such as the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and the University of California Santa Barbara. Since 2009 he has been performing together with three other musicians in the joint band fold radio , which presents music of various styles to the audience.

For the 2013 season he was named the Prize Winner in Residence at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival .
