Joseph Dorfman (composer)

Joseph Dorfman (born August 3, 1940 in Odessa , † June 7, 2006 in Los Angeles ) was an Israeli composer and music teacher.

Dorfman attended the Conservatory in Odessa and studied from 1966 to 1971 at the Gnessin Institute Moscow a . a. with Heinrich Litinsky (1901–1985). In addition, he worked as a composer, pianist and conductor with the Odessa Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and taught piano and composition at various conservatories. He was one of the first to teach contemporary Western music in the Soviet Union.

In 1973 Dorfman emigrated to Israel, while the performance of his works was banned in the Soviet Union until glasnost was introduced. From 1985 until his death he was Professor of Composition and Music Theory at Tel Aviv University . As a visiting professor, he has taught at Columbia University , Yale University , the Frankfurt University of Music and at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . He was also musical director of the 20th Century Music concert series , secretary of the Israeli composers' association and founder of the avant-garde composers group Acoustic 7-11 . Dorfman composed works for solo instruments and chamber music, symphonic works, operas and cantatas. In 2004 he was awarded the Achad Ha'am Prize from the Center for Jewish Art and Creativity .
