Payphone (dt. Telephone Box ) is a song by American pop-rock - band Maroon 5 , together with the rapper Wiz Khalifa . The title was released in April 2012 as the lead single of the fourth studio album Overexposed .

In the United States, the song sold over 493,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Background and publication

After the album Hands All Over (2010), which was produced by Robert Lange , the band now turned more into the pop genre with producers Shellback and Benny Blanco , who already had the worldwide hit single Moves like Jagger (2011), with Christina Aguilera . After the song, on their last tour, the band began to record a new album, entitled Overexposed , which was released on June 22, 2012.

composition

Payphone was written by Adam Levine , Benny Blanco , Ammar Malik, Shellback, Dan Omelio and Cameron Thomaz , and produced by Shellback and Benny Blanco. The song is a medium tempo pop ballad , with a rap verse by Wiz Khalifa in the middle of the song. Thomas Chau of the AOL Radio Blog commented that the title is one of the songs that is more quiet, similar to the songs She Will Be Loved and Won't Go Home Without You . The song begins with Adam Levine's singing, accompanied by a simple piano .

Critical reception

The song received mostly positive reviews. Bill Lamb from About.com gave the song 4 out of 5 stars and praised the entire band in the chorus, Adam Levine's soulful voice and the melodic pop feeling, but he called Wiz Khalifa's rap unnecessary. The Huffington Post's Crystal Bell said the song was one of the band's hottest singles right now. Amy Sciarretto of Pop Crush commented that the song is "lively, casual and catchy".

Live performances

On April 16, 2012, the song was played during the talent show The Voice , on which Adam Levine is a juror and coach. Maroon 5 also played the song on April 21, 2012 for the opening of the new Microsoft Store in Palo Alto, California. Instead, Adam Levine sang for Wiz Khalifa's rap verses: "Now, baby, don't hang up / So I can tell you what you need to know / Baby, I'm begging you / Just, please, don't go / So I can tell you what you need to know ".

Music video

Lyric video

On April 17, 2012, the lyric video for the song appeared on YouTube . It's an animated video that shows Adam Levine as a cartoon. At the beginning of the video Levine is sitting on a phone booth, looking longingly at a photo showing his former love. In the video, Levine makes herself a hero by fighting monsters and protecting an elderly lady from a pickpocket. In addition, you can see in the video Levine with his great love, how they stand in front of the Eiffel Tower and kiss.

Official music video

On May 10, 2012, the official music video for the song was published on the Internet platform YouTube. At the beginning it shows Adam Levine after a rapid chase with the police, who first stands next to his burning getaway car and then goes to a nearby telephone booth. As soon as someone seems to have answered his call, Levine begins to sing the song with the words "I'm at a payphone ...".

After this scene, the video tells the story, which in turn shows Levine as an employee in a bank. This is immediately attacked by masked criminals, but Levine makes a daring attempt to get himself and a colleague out of the building and to safety. However, since the police officers surrounding him consider him to be an accomplice, Levine and his colleague escape on foot, then steal a car and escape.

The following video shows Levine in a chase through a barren, desert-like landscape with an ever-growing police armada, consisting of numerous vehicles and two helicopters. Levine manages several times with skillful maneuvers to distract the police cars behind him, so that they turn off each other in the end. He himself drives the half-destroyed car to a remote gas station, where it finally goes up in flames and explodes. Levine goes to the phone booth, closing the story.

The official music video has been viewed 590 million times so far (as of August 10, 2020), which is significantly more clicks than the poetry video with around 153 million views.
