PJ Morton (born March 29, 1981 in New Orleans ) is an American pop and R&B musician. He became known as the keyboardist of Maroon 5 from 2010 . In the late 2010s, he also had success as a solo musician and producer in the R&B and gospel sectors, for which he was awarded two Grammy Awards .

biography

PJ Morton is the son of Bishop Paul S. Morton, a Canadian Baptist minister in New Orleans. His mother Debra Morton also works as a preacher. PJ grew up in a musical household, his father was friends with Aretha Franklin in his youth , he was a gospel singer himself and has released a number of albums.

Early 2000s began the son of his music career as a member of Freestyle nation , but broke up for an album again, and as a musician on the album Voyage to India by India.Arie (2002). In the following years he worked for Faith Evans , Monica and KiKi Sheard, among others . He won a Dove Award in 2007 as a co-producer of her album This Is Me . He wrote the gospel hit Let Go for DeWayne Woods . He has also released his own studio albums: Emotions (2005), Perfect Song (2007, with band) and Walk Alone (2010).

In 2010 he was brought to Maroon 5 as a tour keyboarder and became a permanent member in 2012 when Jesse Carmichael took a break. He worked on the other albums of the pop-rock band. Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine was next to Stevie Wonder and Busta Rhymes also one of the contributors to Morton's solo album New Orleans in 2013. The album made it into the official US album charts , for the song Only One he got his first own nomination for a Grammy Award , having previously been nominated twice with Maroon 5.

In 2017, the solo album Gumbo followed , which brought further Grammy nominations. The following year, the included cover version of the Bee Gees song How Deep Is Your Love was released as a single with the singer Yebba. It earned him the first Grammy award at the 2019 awards ceremony . On the album Paul , which was again nominated for an R&B Grammy, Rapsody and Jazmine Sullivan appeared in 2019 . Say So , which he recorded with JoJo , was named Best R&B Song.
