Rolling Papers is the third studio album by the American rapper Wiz Khalifa . It was released in the USA on March 29, 2011, and has been available in Germany since May 13 of the same year.
background
After Wiz Khalifa had released his second studio album Deal or No Deal in November 2009, just like his debut album Show and Prove on the independent record label Rostrum Records , the mixtape Kush & Orange Juice was released in April 2010 . This was a great success for Khalifa and rated as one of the “best hip-hop mixtapes of the year”. Due to his success he drew the interest of larger major labels such as the Maybach Music Group , and the musician Drake also offered him to go on tour with him. After declining both offers, he announced on July 30, 2010 that he had signed a record deal with Atlantic Records . He would also begin to record his third studio album.

Publication and promotion
Immediately before the album was released, the mixtape Cabin Fever was released on February 18, 2011 , which served to promote the album, which will be released in March. Rolling Papers is Wiz Khalifa's first album to be released on a major label .
On January 26, 2011, the rapper announced the name and the date of publication. He also revealed that the title of his CD has three different meanings.
- “The title of the album is appropriate. It's called Rolling Papers , like the papers you roll and the ones I roll and the ones we smoke. But [the meaning] is also deeper. I thought [of that name] before I even started recording the album and had an idea about this one. It's not just about marijuana. It's something bigger. My career really took off when I started smoking paper. "
- “The second reason I called it Rolling Papers is that when I left Warner Bros. I was more or less getting my rolling papers . I got my contract bloody curled up and smoke colored. And I was given the opportunity to go, to quit, to do my thing and to capitalize on it. So this is another pair of papers that I've really needed in my life. "
- “The third reason [for the name] is that I gave up writing [lyrics] a long time ago. I stopped writing it down or typing it into my BlackBerry or iPhone . I wrote down notes, but I didn't write real verses, so it was like goodbye on paper. The paper has also been rolled out. Everything was very natural. The first thought that came to my mind was how I really feel. It feels like this is my most natural sound now. That's what I put the most value on the album. I was very focused. I was really in the mood for this stuff when I was working on it and I didn't use any paper other than the cigarette paper. "
Singles
So far, four songs from the album have been officially released as a single. The first, Black and Yellow , on September 14, 2010. Five months after its release, in February 2011, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 . In June 2011, the song about the colors of the flag of the rapper's hometown, Pittsburgh , was awarded three times platinum in the USA for 3,000,000 records sold.
On February 3, 2011, the second single from the album was released, Roll Up . This rose to 13th place in the USA and was also awarded platinum.
On March 8, 2011, the song The Race was released as the second promotional sound carrier and reached 66th place in the United States.
The song On My Level , on which Too Short also participates, was released on May 28th as the first promotional sound carrier . It reached number 52 in the USA and was later released again as the third single, but then only placed at number 78. It was certified gold in November 2011 in the USA.
On March 22nd, No Sleep was released as the third promotional record. After the song placed sixth in the US, it was released on August 9, 2011 as the fourth and final single. It is also certified with platinum.
The song When I'm Gone also reached a chart position, although it was not released as a promotional sound carrier or single.

reception
The album only got average criteria. It only reached 59% based on 24 reviews. For example, Brandon Soderberg of Spin magazine wrote that the album embraced the tenacious one-note approach of the numerous mixtapes that paved the way for his sizeable follow-up album. The Boston Globe said the album was as safe as possible and, with one exception, was a collection of radio-accessible singles. Brad Wete of Entertainment Weekly claimed that the album was lyrically limited to, to be intoxicating. It's all about women, cannabis and money. Even so, it glows with the passion of an outsider and the wickedness of a winner.
