The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic in 2002 was the 62nd New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic and took place on January 1, 2002 in the great hall of the Vienna Music Association. It was conducted by Seiji Ozawa .

Television broadcast

The second part of the live broadcast of the "New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic" saw 1,080,000 viewers in Austria. The New Year's Concert 2002 was a co-production between ORF, ZDF and the Japanese television company NHK . It was broadcast in two parts and could be seen in 48 countries on five continents. The Spanish Riding School was shown on live TV for the first time since 1987 . On the occasion of the introduction of the euro, the director Brian Large shot a “Dance of Machines” in the Oesterreichische Nationalbank and the Austrian Mint. The setting for the "Danube Waltz", traditionally danced live by the Vienna State Opera Ballet and choreographed by Vladimir Malakhov , was the parliament building. For the break program, Gernot Friedel filmed Austrian rivers, lakes and glaciers “In the river of the seasons”.

Recordings

A live recording of the concert was published on compact discs ( DNB 358085918 ) and on DVD.

The recording of the concert is one of the best-selling albums in Austria in 2002 .

In Japan, the first limited edition CD was released on January 19, 2002, and a full recording was released on March 27, 2002. Total sales in Japan were 800,000 copies.
