Brian Large

Brian Large (born February 16, 1939 in London ) is a British television director of opera broadcasts.

Life

He was chief opera director at the BBC from 1965 to 1980 , and since 1980 he has been Head of Media at the New York Metropolitan Opera . He has won two Emmys for TV recordings, namely an Outstanding Achievement Award in 1991 for the Silver Jubilee Gala of the Met and one in 1992 for the production of Puccini's opera Tosca under Zubin Mehta .

Among other things, Large directed the recordings of the Ring Cycle in Bayreuth in 1980, the video of the Three Tenors (1990) and some videos by Cecilia Bartoli . From 1991 to 2009 and in 2011 he directed the television broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert .

Large also wrote two biographies, on Bedřich Smetana (1970) and Bohuslav Martinů (1976).
