history

Today's Wolfgang Industrial Park was founded in 1875 as the Royal Prussian Powder Factory . In a few years one of the most modern armaments companies of its time was established, mainly producing tubular powder and gun cotton. Both were used for the production of explosives. After the loss of the First World War , all state armaments facilities were demilitarized in accordance with the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty ; the production facilities were largely destroyed. The remaining workers then initially produced furniture. In 1922 a chemist came up with the idea of using the gun cotton that was still available to make synthetic leather.

Imitation leather production using its own process celebrated great success from 1927, which led to the establishment of Deutsche Kunstleder-Werke GmbH , Wolfgang four years later . The owner was Deutsche Industriewerke AG , Berlin. In 1933, Degussa AG, Frankfurt, bought the site and the production facilities from her . From 1939 to 1945 the plant in Wolfgang produced large quantities of artificial leather for the Wehrmacht. In addition, the first work in application research began in 1941. After the Second World War, a basis for the new start of the plant could be created with the remaining raw materials, the machines that were still available and in almost undamaged buildings. In 1947 Degussa relocated the industrial furnace construction department from Frankfurt to the plant in Hanau-Wolfgang, and other business areas followed later.

Research and development activities began in Hanau-Wolfgang in the 1950s: in 1957 the decision was made to combine all of Degussa's research facilities in one place. In the 1960s, Degussa first combined chemical research in Wolfgang, followed by application technology chemistry and metal research. In 1975 the era of artificial leather came to an end in Wolfgang. Three years earlier, Degussa had started to relocate its precious metal production to Wolfgang, where the largest precious metal plant in Europe had been built. However, since Degussa consistently concentrated on the specialty chemicals business from the end of the 20th century, the entire precious metals activities were sold in 2001. In the same year, the Degussa site in Hanau-Wolfgang became the Wolfgang Industrial Park .

In 2007 Degussa became part of the new Evonik Industries AG group. In 2010, Evonik's Frankfurt am Main location also moved to the Wolfgang industrial park. An office complex for the 800 employees had previously been built in the IPW. The Wolfgang Industrial Park continues to be an important center for research and development for Evonik Industries and the second largest location for the specialty chemicals company.

education

Evonik, Umicore and other companies based at the site train around 100 trainees every year in the Wolfgang industrial park. The young people receive future-oriented professional training in the commercial, scientific and technical fields. In cooperation with the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University, these apprenticeships also include Bachelor courses with an international profile. The training is completed by professional courses, foreign language training, stays abroad, project work and prevention programs as well as extra-occupational studies. In 2012, the JuniorStore was opened in the Wolfgang Industrial Park, where commercial trainees learn how to run a shop under real conditions. The JuniorStore is looked after by four apprentices each on a rotation basis.
