Orion Engineered Carbons SA (short: Orion Engineered Carbons ) is a global industrial company in the specialty chemicals sector . The company is one of the world's leading suppliers of carbon blacks . The head office is in Luxembourg . Fourteen production sites and four research centers are maintained worldwide.

history

In 2011 Evonik Industries sold its carbon black business to the financial investors Rhône Capital and Triton Partners as part of a carve out . The resulting company has been operating under the name Orion Engineered Carbons ever since. The time before the company became independent was therefore long characterized by belonging to Degussa and (later) Evonik, and it began as early as the 1930s.

Business areas

In the area of carbon blacks , Orion Engineered Carbons is the world's largest manufacturer of pigment blacks and the third largest manufacturer of rubber blacks for many blue-chip companies in a wide variety of industries. The areas rubber carbon blacks (mostly used in the tire industry) and specialty carbon blacks (used in paints, lithium-ion batteries and various coatings) can be roughly divided . Carbon blacks from Orion Engineered Carbons are therefore used by tire manufacturers, companies from the plastics, paints and varnishes sector, manufacturers of inks and toners for printers and the automotive industry.

initial public offering

The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) (symbol “OEC”). The IPO took place in 2014 and raised $ 350 million in the initial listing .

Cooperations

Orion Engineered Carbons' "Kalscheuren" plant in Cologne entered into a long-term cooperation regarding the district heating supply with the municipal utilities of the immediately adjacent city of Hürth in 2017. The aim is to install a system with two turbines via combined heat and power Coupling will cover around 75 percent of the district heating needs of Stadtwerke Hürth from 2018. According to Stadtwerke Hürth, the cooperation is designed for 20 years and has an investment volume of 30 million euros .
