New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic 1989

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1989 was the 49th New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic and took place on January 1, 1989 at the Vienna Musikverein . It was conducted for the first time by Carlos Kleiber .

status

Carlos Kleiber conducted the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic only twice, in 1989 and 1992. These two concerts have a special place in the history of this institution, which is rich in highlights, as the maestro was and is still considered the Johann Strauss expert par excellence and his interpretation the Fledermaus overture with the Vienna Philharmonic as the ultimate implementation of this piece of music. Peter Overbeck described the reason for the high level of acceptance of the "exceptional conductor " (on the occasion of a review of a rehearsal of the Fledermaus overture in 2003) as follows: "the rare combination of elegance, lightness and clarity of conducting, paired with the highest musicality".

The program of the concert was heavily geared towards the younger Johann Strauss. Eleven of the 16 works presented came from his pen, plus four polkas by his younger brother Josef Strauss and the obligatory conclusion with the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss (father) . The highlights of the concert included - in addition to the Fledermaus overture - the three long waltz accelerations , artist life and spring voices by Johann Strauss (son) as well as the pizzicato polka , which was composed by both brothers together. “So beautiful, so wonderfully soft, extremely delicate and finely nuanced down to the icing on the cake and extremely tense and annoying, you can only very rarely hear the music of the Strauss Vater & Söhne company. And even with the traditional New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic, this is by no means the norm. "

The audience and the press cheered. In 2014, on the 75th anniversary of the New Year's Concert, people remembered that “the two Kleiber concerts were among the best, most energetic of these 75 years”. In 1992, Kleiber took over the New Year's Concert in place of Leonard Bernstein, who died in 1990 . When the Philharmonic wanted to win him over for a third New Year's concert, he is said to have told the orchestra director Werner Resel that two were enough and that he couldn't smile for two hours.

The flower arrangement was - as it has been every year since 1980 - a gift from the Italian city of Sanremo .

preparation

The preparations for the concert were extremely complex, as the conductor insisted on exceptional sheet music for all parts; on the other hand because of his reluctance to press, his unpredictability and his special requests. Werner Resel said in an interview: “This New Year's concert was overdue and in the end he wanted it too. He wanted to try it out. ”The Philharmonic responded to almost all of the maestro's requests; he didn't have to give an interview. When he was told that there would naturally be applause during the obligatory Radetzkymarsch encore, the conductor did not want that. He is said to have said: "I tell you, Mr. Resel, if there is clapping, I will have the hall cleared." The board of the Vienna Philharmonic finally managed to make it clear to the conductor that this could not be done to the audience and that it would last for a long time Would be tradition. Resel: "He endured that too."

Clemens Hellsberg , long-time concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, on the conductor:

“26 concerts [under the direction of Kleiber] are marginal in the history of our association, which will soon include 7,000 performances; But that musical cosmos that Carlos Kleiber opened up in each of his concerts, the feeling of not only going with him to, but over one's own limits, will remain unforgettable for everyone who was allowed to experience this.
