Voices of spring

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spring Voices (op. 410) is a concert waltz for orchestra or for coloratura soprano and orchestra by Johann Strauss (son) . It was composed in 1883. The coloratura waltz was dedicated to Bianca Bianchi and the piano reduction to the composer Alfred Grünfeld . The soprano Bianca Bianchi sang at the premiere on March 1, 1883 in the Theater an der Wien . The waltz soon became a hit and was also sung as an interlude in operas by other composers (e.g. by Léo Delibes and Gioachino Rossini ). The playing time is about 6–9 minutes.

The motifs deal thematically with spring. Here, for example, the cheerfulness and freshness associated with spring is embodied by the erratic major motifs or the bird voices by flute parts.

song lyrics

Richard Genée wrote a song text for the waltz that can be singed to the music:

The lark floats in the blue heights,
the dew wind blows so mildly;
its pleasant, mild breath invigorates
and kisses the field, the meadow.
Spring awakens in lovely splendor,
ah all pain may be over,
all sorrow, escaped it is far!
Pain becomes milder, happy pictures,
Belief in happiness returns;
Sunshine, ah now penetrates
ah, everyone laughs, ah, ah, wakes up!
The spring of songs also flows there,
who had seemed to be silent for too long;
sound heard there again pure and bright
sweet voices from the branches!
Ah quietly the nightingale leaves
hear the first notes
so as not to disturb the queen,
keep silent, you singers all!
Her sweet tone will soon be heard full of.
Oh yes soon, ah, ah yes soon!
Ah, ah, ah, ah!
O sang the nightingale, sweet sound, ah yes!
Love glows through, ah, ah, ah,
the song sounds, ah and the sound,
sweet and daring, seems to complain too,
ah ah lulls the heart into sweet dreams
ah, ah, ah, ah, softly one!
Longing and lust
ah ah ah lives in the chest
ah, if your singing beckons so bang,
distant sparkling like stars,
ah ah shimmering like the moon's ray,
ah ah ah ah waves through the valley!
The night hardly wants to disappear
Lerchensong freshly awakened,
ah, light comes they announce,
Shadows disappear! Ah!
Ah the voices of spring sound like daring,
ah yes, ah yes ah oh sweet sound,
ah ah ah ah oh yes!

Remarks

The waltz was originally called the Bianchi waltz . The title was changed to its current name before printing. The instrumental version is set (instrumented) very differently than the vocal version. This orchestral work was premiered on March 18, 1883 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein under the direction of Eduard Strauss . Both versions were very popular with the audience. Both versions of the waltz can still be found on the concert programs today. Richard Genée, who wrote the text, has, according to the Naxos CD description, contributed to the musical arrangement at least for the Kolarus Waltz.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 7 minutes and 6 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can change by up to a minute plus or minus.

Individual evidence

  1. Information on the piece on klassika.info - Grünfeld also created a piano arrangement of the waltz (see CD recording by Rudolf Buchbinder).
  2. There are contradicting statements in the literature as to whether the first performance was an immediate success or whether the waltz only 'caught on' in a roundabout way. - Details on the history of reception: Otto Schneidereit, Johann Strauss and the city on the beautiful blue Danube, Berlin: VEB Lied der Zeit, 4th ed. 1982, pp. 233–234; Anton Mayer, Johann Strauss - A Pop Idol of the 19th Century, Vienna etc .: Böhlau 1998, p. 185; Johann Strauss - for his 150th birthday.
