Werner Resel
Werner Resel (born June 22, 1935 in Essen ) is a cellist . From 1987 to 1997 he was director of the Vienna Philharmonic .
Life
Werner Resel studied cello with Richard Krotschak at the Vienna Music Academy from 1949 . From 1955 to 1959 he was the principal cellist of the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria .
In 1959 Walter Weller , Josef Kondor, Helmut Weis and Werner Resel founded the Weller Quartet . In 1959 Werner Resel became a member of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and in 1962 a member of the Vienna Philharmonic, of which he was managing director from 1982 to 1986. In 1987 he succeeded Alfred Altenburger (* 1927) as director of the Vienna Philharmonic, and in 1997 Clemens Hellsberg replaced him in this role. In 2006 he retired as a cellist with the Vienna Philharmonic.
Werner Resel is Vice President of the Johann Strauss Society in Vienna . In 1995 he was a guest on the ORF program Phettbergs Nette Leit Show .
