The Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, under the direction of Johannes Prinz, took part in a New Year's concert by the Vienna Philharmonic for the first time, with the moonrise from the opera Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor by Otto Nicolai , founder of the Vienna Philharmonic. There were eight premieres on the program, and silver dust was blown into the audience by the organ. In their program, the Philharmoniker paid tribute to the 300th birthday of Maria Theresa , the world premiere of the waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube 150 years ago, the founding of the Vienna Clock Museum a hundred years ago and its own 175th anniversary.
