Ernst Ottensamer

Ernst Ottensamer (born October 5, 1955 in Wallern an der Trattnach , Upper Austria ; † July 22, 2017 ) was an Austrian clarinetist .

Life

Ernst Ottensamer studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and completed his diploma with distinction. In 1979 he was engaged as a clarinetist with the Vienna Philharmonic and in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera . Since 1983 he has held the position of solo clarinetist there.

In 2000 he received a professorship at the University of Music in Vienna, where he has been teaching since 1986.

Ottensamer's artistic career was characterized by extensive chamber music and solo activities. He founded several chamber music ensembles, including the Vienna Virtuoso , which is made up of soloists from the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Wind Ensemble and the Vienna Soloist Trio. He has given solo concerts with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra , the Haydn Sinfonietta Vienna, the Budapest Philharmonic, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz , the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Japan Philharmonic .

Daniel and Andreas Ottensamer , who are also clarinetists, are the sons of Ernst Ottensamer. Together they performed as the clarinet trio The Clarinotts and were seen in this formation in the interlude film of the Vienna Philharmonic's 2016 New Year's concert . The composer Iván Eröd dedicated the three-movement Triple Concerto for three clarinets and orchestra op. 92, which was premiered in January 2016 with the Vienna Philharmonic.

Ernst Ottensamer died in July 2017 at the age of 61 as a result of a heart attack.
