The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic 2016 was the 76th New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic and took place on January 1, 2016 at the Wiener Musikverein . The conductor was for the third time Mariss Jansons , who had previously conducted the concert in 2006 and 2012.

particularities

With this concert the Philharmonic celebrated the 75th anniversary of the New Year's Concert; the first concert on New Year's Day took place on January 1, 1941. Before that there was a New Year concert on December 31, 1939. Works by Émile Waldteufel and Robert Stolz were performed for the first time as part of a New Year's concert. The UN March by Stolz, composed in 1962, was included in the program on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the first General Assembly of the United Nations , and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was a guest in the audience.

During the Schnellpolka amusement train , recordings from the Wurstelprater , the Liliputbahn Prater and the Wiener Riesenrad were shown, Mariss Jansons blew the signal horn. Eduard Strauss died in 1916 - he was reminded of the Schnellpolka Mit Extrapost in the first part of the concert. Before this piece, Jansons had a postmaster present him with a baton that was once in the possession of Johann Strauss. In the second part he followed, with a ballet interlude, the Schnellpolka out of bounds . The Kaiserwalzer commemorated the 100th anniversary of the death of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

The Vienna Boys' Choir was invited to take part in a New Year's concert for the sixth time. At the request of Mariss Jansons, the Polka Auf Ferienreisen was given a new text by the head dramaturge of the Vienna Boys' Choir, Tina Breckwoldt.
