The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic 2018 was the 78th New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic and took place on January 1, 2018 at the Wiener Musikverein . The conductor was Riccardo Muti for the fifth time , who had previously conducted the concert in 1993, 1997, 2000 and 2004.

Soloists from the Vienna State Ballet at Schloss Eckartsau and in the Hofpavillon in Vienna- Hietzing were in front of the camera for the dance interludes ; Henning Kasten, who most recently directed the Vienna Philharmonic's summer night concert, was responsible for the dance . The choreography for the dances comes from Davide Bombana , as before in 2012 and 2015 . The couples Maria Yakovleva and Eno Peci, Ioanna Avraam and Mihail Sosnovschi, Alice Firenze and Francesco Costa, Elena Bottaro and Richard Szabo as well as Adele Fiocchi and Andrey Teterin danced to the waltz Roses from the South by Johann Strauss (son) at Eckartsau Castle . In the Hietzinger Pavilion, Rebecca Horner and Roman Lazik danced a pas de deux to the Stephanie gavotte by Alfons Czibulka . The ballet costumes came from Jordi Roig.

The locations of the dance interludes commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of the architect of the court pavilion, Otto Wagner , and the historical events of 1918 at Eckartsau Castle.

Floral decorations

For the fourth time, the floral decorations came from the Viennese city gardens. 30,000 blossoms of roses , amaryllis and cymbidiums were earmarked for the Golden Hall. Muti's homeland, Italy, was honored with carnations and lilies . The flowers were kept in subtle pastel, the color shades of pink, pastel orange and fresh green dominated.

Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz invited the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, to the New Year's Concert 2018, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen invited the heads of state of the Austrian EU Council Presidency partners Estonia and Bulgaria . Van der Bellen and his wife, Doris Schmidauer , welcomed the Estonian President, Kersti Kaljulaid , and her husband, Georgi Rene Maksimovski, as well as the Bulgarian President, Rumen Radew , and his wife, Desislawa Radewa, to the music association. Since July 1, 2017, Austria has formed a trio with Estonia and Bulgaria in the Presidency of the Council of the European Union with a joint program to ensure more continuity in EU policy. The Bulgarian EU Council Presidency 2018 begins on January 1st and the Austrian EU Council Presidency 2018 starts on July 1st . The break film for the New Year's Concert 2018 entitled Wiener Moderne 1918 2018 was designed and produced by Georg Riha and commemorated Viennese Modernism and its most important representatives Otto Wagner , Gustav Klimt , Egon Schiele and Koloman Moser , who all died in 1918. The painter Broncia Koller-Pinell played a small, unifying role as her muse and companion. In the approximately 26-minute film, the ensembles of the Vienna Philharmonic made music at various historical Viennese locations, filming locations included the Wiener Postsparkasse , the U-Bahn pavilions, the Steinhof Church , the former Länderbankzentrale , the Austrian Belvedere Gallery , the Schützenhaus , the Nussdorfer Wehr and the MuseumsQuartier . The student couple was portrayed by the actors Annalena Kubinger and Philipp Quell, Martin Traxl was in charge . The film was made as a co-production by ORF and the Vienna Philharmonic, produced by Riha Film in partnership with WienTourismus and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce .

Henning Kasten was responsible for the 60th ORF broadcast for the first time, and fourteen HD cameras were used. As in previous years, Barbara Rett took over the moderation for ORF . The concert was broadcast in 95 countries around the world. Hugh Bonneville hosted the broadcast for the US TV chain PBS for the first time , after Julie Andrews had presented the event eight times.

In Austria, an average of 877,000 people interested in music watched the first part, which corresponded to a market share of 49 percent. The second part was followed by an average of 1.14 million viewers, the market share was also 49 percent. The break film reached an average of one million viewers.

Recordings

The audio double CD of this concert was released on January 5, 2018 and is one of the best-selling albums of 2018 in Austria . DVD and Blu Ray Disc were released on January 26, 2018.
