Broncia Koller-Pinell
Broncia Koller-Pinell (born February 25, 1863 in Sanok , Austria-Hungary ; died April 26, 1934 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter .
Life
The artist was born as Bronisława Pineles in Galicia , then Austria . She came from a Jewish family. Her parents were Saul Pineles (1834–1903) and Clara, b. Herzig (1835-1910). In 1870 she came to Vienna with her parents, where she received private painting lessons from Robert Raab and Alois Delug , as women were not allowed to attend the academy. In 1885 she was able to exhibit a painting in public for the first time. From 1885–87 she studied at the women's academy of the Munich Artists' Association under Ludwig von Herterich . This was followed by exhibitions in the Vienna Künstlerhaus, in Munich and Leipzig. She also had good contacts with musicians and composers such as Hugo Wolf .
In 1896 she married the Catholic doctor Hugo Koller, with whom she had two children, Silvia Koller (1889–1963) and the conductor Rupert Koller. The couple initially lived in Nuremberg , but returned to Vienna in 1902. Here she was accepted into the circle around Gustav Klimt and the Secessionists. In 1904 she moved to Oberwaltersdorf , where she inherited a house that was furnished by Josef Hoffmann and Kolo Moser . Numerous important artists and scientists, such as Egon Schiele , frequented this house . After the First World War, she had contact with Anton Faistauer , Albert Paris Gütersloh and Franz von Zülow .
Broncia Koller-Pinell was buried in the Döblinger Friedhof .

Broncia Koller-Pinell is one of the most important artists in Austria at the turn of the century, alongside Olga Wisinger-Florian , Tina Blau and Marie Egner . It passed through many modern art movements, from Impressionism and Art Nouveau to Expressionism and New Objectivity . Her painting themes were mainly portraits, genre and still life. Her work was often controversial and exposed to harsh criticism.
