Franz von Zulow
Franz von Zülow (born March 15, 1883 in Vienna ; † February 26, 1963 there ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .
origin
The original Mecklenburg noble family von Zülow can be traced back to the first mention in 1282. Franz von Zülow's parents were Franz Ernst Emil von Zülow (* July 23, 1853 - July 1, 1894) and his wife Marie Schwarz from Haugsdorf.
Life
Franz von Zülow received graphic training from 1901 to 1903 at the General Drawing School and the Graphic Training and Research Institute in Vienna and was a short-term intern at the Academy of Fine Arts with Christian Griepenkerl . He then attended the arts and crafts school until 1906 . In 1908 he became a member of the Vienna Secession . In 1912, the Princely Liechtenstein Travel Scholarship enabled him to go on an extensive study trip through Western Europe.
1915-1919 he did military service in World War I and was taken prisoner in Italy .
From 1920–1922 he worked as a teacher at the Schleiss ceramic workshops in Gmunden . From 1922 he lived alternately in Vienna and Hirschbach im Mühlkreis and undertook several trips abroad. Zülow belonged to the Zinkenbach painters' colony in the interwar period . In 1933 Franz von Zülow received the Austrian State Prize . In 1949 he began teaching at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz (at that time the Linz Art School). In 1955 he became an honorary member and president of the Mühlviertel Artists' Guild (since 2001 the Zülow Group ) and in 1958 an honorary member of the Vienna Secession .
Around 1940 he lived on the Sternberg farm in Scharnstein. There he painted walls, doors and ceilings with different motifs. The Sternberg farm has been a listed building since 2018 .
In 1968 the Zülowgasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him. The house and its inventory in Unterhirschbachgraben 16 (municipality of Hirschbach in the Mühlkreis) is a listed building .
Create
Zülow's art is rooted in the endeavors of the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte at the beginning of the 20th century, from which his versatility can be derived. He was active in various fields of the applied arts and created picture books, calendar pages, graphic cycles, but also wall paintings and carpets, designed wallpapers and fabric samples, decorated household items, painted furniture and furnishings.
technology
The main focus of his work is on printmaking , the technical possibilities of which he expanded experimentally. The paper cut printing he invented was patented in 1907. In this process, the motif is cut out of a sheet of paper, the resulting template is then colored and printed the wrong way round. In contrast to conventional stencil technology, the representation is not determined by the cut-out negative shapes, but by the remaining webs. These form a network of black outlines; the free areas in between are brightly colored. The effect of a cloisonné achieved in this way is a characteristic design intention of Zülow and often occurs in other techniques.
subjects
In addition to this decorative surface art, which originated in Art Nouveau, there were influences from folk art , so that Zülow can speak of naively simplified ornamentation at a high artistic level. Zülow also preferred undemanding subjects thematically: landscapes, rural life, religious motifs, fairytale-like and fantastically exotic scenes. Parallel to this art-craft-oriented oeuvre, however, he also created oil paintings - almost exclusively landscapes - which are characterized by an expressive and painterly application of paint.
