Marie Egner (born August 25, 1850 in Bad Radkersburg , Styria , † March 31, 1940 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Marie Egner from Styria first studied in Graz with the drawing teacher Hermann von Königsbrunn and then went to Düsseldorf , where she was a student of Carl Jungheim (1830–1886) from 1872 to 1875 . In 1882 she came to Vienna, where she settled with her mother. Here she was a student of Emil Jakob Schindler until 1887 , in whose circle she painted in the summer months at Plankenberg Castle in Lower Austria . Study visits took her through Europe, staying in England from 1887 to 1889 . Then the first successes came about; Egner had exhibitions in the Vienna Künstlerhaus , in Germany and England. In Vienna from 1900 to 1909 she was an exhibition member of the artist group Eight Artists , a forerunner of organized women artists. She had to give up her own painting school for women in 1910 for health reasons. After the First World War she belonged to the Association of Austrian Women Artists (VBKÖ), which organized a large exhibition for Marie Egner in 1926. From 1930 onwards she lost her sight and withdrew from the public.

After her death, Marie Egner was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 13B, row 3, no. 16).

power

Marie Egner was next to Tina Blau , Olga Wisinger-Florian and Broncia Koller the most important artist in Austria around 1900. As a student of Emil Jakob Schindler, she is assigned to Austrian mood impressionism. Thematically, she dealt largely with landscape painting in oil and watercolor as well as pieces of flowers. Her motifs were created in plein-air painting in front of nature .
