Werner Fenz

Werner Fenz (born July 21, 1944 in Graz ; † June 24, 2016 there ) was an Austrian art historian, exhibition curator and long-time director of the Institute for Art in Public Spaces in Styria .

Life

Werner Fenz studied art history , German and archeology in Graz and Vienna until 1970 . From 1969 he was a research assistant at the Neue Galerie at the Landesmuseum Joanneum , where he headed the gallery from 1993 to 1997. From 1998 Fenz was project curator in the cultural department of Styria and in the cultural office of the city of Graz. In 2003 Fenz was again an employee of the Landesmuseum Joanneum. From 2006 to 2009 Fenz was head of department at the Künstlerhaus Graz . From 2006 to 2011 he was head of the Institute for Art in Public Spaces in Styria.

Werner Fenz was a member of the Federal Photography Advisory Board several times. He was on the Lower Austrian panel of experts for art in public spaces and was responsible for the artistic design of the government district of the new provincial capital St. Pölten . He was a member of the Styrian art and building jury and the art jury for the LKH 2000 project in Graz.

From 1970 Werner Fenz had a teaching position for art history at the Kunstgewerbeschule Graz and from 1976 at the Pedagogical Academy of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau and from 1979 at the Institute for Art History of the Karl-Franzens University Graz . In 1995 he qualified as a professor for contemporary art history. His project and research focus were art in public space, photography and contemporary art.

Werner Fenz was married to Ulrike Fenz-Kortschak and has a son, Daniel Kortschak.

From 2020, the City of Graz's Department of Culture will advertise the Werner Fenz grant for artistic work in public space and award it biennially .
