Karl Anton Wolf (born September 8, 1908 in Vienna , Austria ; † March 9, 1989 ibid) was an Austrian painter and sculptor .

Karl Anton Wolf was an autodidact as an artist . He is known for his large format pictures and iron sculptures. One of his sculptures is in front of the Votive Church in Vienna , others in the Vienna Danube Park and in Fischamend at the entrance to the Danube floodplains.

Live and act

After attending secondary school, Wolf initially worked for a freight forwarding company. From 1927 to 1939 he made extensive study trips through Europe and Africa. He exercised numerous professions and was always artistically active: He composed, wrote texts and painted.

After his military service in World War II , Wolf opened a business in the mineral oil trade in 1945. In 1953, Wolf decided to finally work as a freelance artist.

In 1957 he created his large-format pictures “World Theater” and “Babylonian Tower”. In the same year he was a prizewinner at the 4th  São Paulo Biennale . In 1959 Karl Anton Wolf participated in the documenta II in Kassel . In 1961 he was awarded the Austrian Ministry of Education .

After 1968, Wolf became involved in sculpture, and some iron sculptures were created. In 1970 he was a participant in the 35th Venice Biennale . Wolf began to deal with material images. In 1971 the important solo exhibition “Karl Anton Wolf. Plastik-Bilder Grafik "takes place in the" New Gallery of the City of Linz ". In 1972 he was awarded the title of professor.

Wolf also wrote scripts. So in 1983 the scripts "Parabal" and "Das Erdhaufenspiel" were created. Both scripts have not yet been filmed, but “Parabal” was broadcast as a radio play in 1985 on Swiss radio.

In 1987, Wolf founded the Karl Anton Wolf Foundation in Vienna, which aims to provide financial support to artistic talents. In the same year Wolf was awarded the “Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna”.

Karl Anton Wolf's tomb is located in the Neustift cemetery in Vienna.
