from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Augustines de la Miséricorde de Jésus ( French for "Augustinians of the Mercy of Jesus") are a Roman Catholic women's order that was formed in 1957 through the union of 14 independent houses of the Augustines hospitalières in Canada . In addition, three houses in Paraguay belong to this association.

The origin of the order is in the 17th century. In 1608 the settlement of the colony in Québec began , which was cared for by the Jesuits . In 1625 they asked for female religious to be sent to take care of the girls' upbringing and nursing. In 1639 three Augustinians from Dieppe in France came to Canada together with some Ursulines ; they were the first women religious in this country. Among them was the mystic Marie-Christine de Saint-Augustin. With the help of the French royal family, the Augustinians founded the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec hospital . It was the first hospital north of Mexico. In the first few years, a smallpox epidemic showed how urgent the establishment of the sisters was. As early as 1647 an Indian woman was accepted into the order by the Hurons .

The Generalate of the Order is now located in Sillery , Québec. Convents are located in Québec, Chicoutimi , Roberval , Gaspé and Dolbeau-Mistassini . In 1996 there were a total of 350 sisters.
