Gaspé is a city in the southeast of the Canadian Quebec . It is located at the northeastern end of the Gaspésie peninsula on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and is the capital of the Gaspésie – Îles-de-la-Madeleine administrative region .
The city was founded in 1534 by the French explorer Jacques Cartier , who established New France for King François I of France. The Forillon National Park , the oldest national park in the Canadian province of Quebec , located in the municipality of Gaspé. The national park and the associated tourism are a central pillar of the local economy.
etymology
The most common assumption is that the Begrieff Gaspé from the Mi'kmaq word Gespeg derived what country the end means. However, there are also theories that it is a corruption of the Basque word geizpe or kerizpe , which means something like protection or refuge . Another theory assumes that the city was named after the Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real . was exploring the Labrador in 1500.
In 1600 the Englishman Richard Hakluyt used the notation Gaspay in his translation of "Cosmosgraphie" by Jean Alfonse. Other spellings are Gachepé , Gachepay , Gaschepay , Gaspey , Gaspèche and Gapèche .
