Hugh Bonneville (* 10. November 1963 in London ; native Hugh Bonneville Richard Williams ) is a British actor .

Life and accomplishments

Bonneville was born the son of a surgeon and nurse who worked intermittently for MI6 . He took acting classes at London's Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company for several years . When his contract was not renewed there, he made his debut in an episode of the British television series Chancer from 1990. In the television comedy Stalag Luft (1993) he played one of the larger roles alongside Stephen Fry . He played the unsuccessful stockbroker Bernie in the 1999 comedy Notting Hill with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant .

In the biopic Iris (2001) Bonneville played the husband of Iris Murdoch ( Kate Winslet ). This role earned him a 2002 BAFTA Award nomination . In the same year he received the New Talent Award of the Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for the European Film Prize.

In the thriller Stella's Temptation (2005), Bonneville played one of the leading roles alongside Natasha Richardson . In the comedy Scenes of a Sexual Nature (2006) he starred alongside Ewan McGregor . In the disaster film Tsunami - The Wave of Killers (2006) he played the British ambassador who helps the victims of the tsunami . In the drama A Song to Love (2006) he appeared in a larger role alongside Stanley Tucci and Rhys Ifans .

In 2009 Bonneville played the costume role of Captain Oldknow in the youth film The Chimneys of Green Knowe (Original From Time to Time ). Julian Fellows was the director and producer.

From 2010 to 2015 he played the Earl of Grantham in the television series Downton Abbey . Bonneville was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for this role . In 2012, Bonneville received one of the 16 Emmy nominations for the series for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

Bonneville has been married since 1998 and has one child.
