action

Florence 1970: Marco, who grew up in a wealthy Italian family, learns that he is adopted and that he actually comes from England . An old postcard takes him to Preston in northern England. Meanwhile, the young student Ellie is planning a trip there with her boyfriend Carl, who has returned home for the semester break. However, Carl is only moderately enthusiastic about Ellie's suggestion to hike coast to coast to Whitby . The elections are coming up and he wants to support the Labor Party in the election campaign. What's more, the World Cup is currently taking place in Mexico and he doesn't want to miss a game. Only when Ellie tells him that she's now on the pill does he enjoy a trip on foot. When Ellie tries to choose a hiking route in the library, she meets Marco, who is researching his roots there. Impressed by his red Lamborghini Miura , Ellie offers him her help and drives him to Blackburn , where Marco learns from his aunt and uncle that his parents have been killed in an accident.

After taking Marco a bit in his car the next morning, Ellie and Carl set off for Whitby. In the next town they are accommodated in a youth hostel - albeit in separate rooms with double bunk beds, which Carl doesn't really like. A television is also not available. They finally meet Marco again, who accommodates them in a luxury hotel at his own expense. While Ellie is enthusiastic about her new accommodation, Carl feels extremely uncomfortable and fears that he could be expelled from his left-wing party for it. He'd rather camp with Ellie. She is angry at first, but can then be persuaded to do so. While they are bathing nude at a nearby lake, they are photographed by an elderly woman named Marjorie, who turns out to be a professional photographer. The three of them hike to a ruined monastery, where they meet Marco again, who then drives Ellie and Carl to the next town. In a pub they watch the World Cup quarter-finals between England and West Germany. England loses and Carl and his compatriots are broken. Only Marco cheers when Italy wins their quarter-finals. Because Carl thinks the Italians didn't play fair, Ellie leaves the bar with Marco. Carl runs after them drunk and Ellie finally slaps him on the face. Ellie spends the following night in a boarding house with Marco, who finds his Lamborghini battered and dirty the next day.

Marco has his car repaired in Thirsk . In the meantime, he and Ellie drive to the place of his birth in a replacement car. A couple who are friends with his parents greets him warmly and he and Ellie get closer again. Marco's father had once worked as an Italian prisoner of war on a farm. Marco drives with Ellie to the now dilapidated barracks of the Italian workers. Later they stop again at a ruined monastery. There Ellie confesses that she wants to be a designer and Marco assures her that she has what it takes. Carl, who followed them, ends up at a party that evening for the Tories who won the election. A woman he has protected from her violent husband leads him into a billiard room. There they are caught having sex by their husband and other men and Carl is then beaten up. The next day, Marco and Ellie pick up the repaired Lamborghini and drive to Whitby, where Marco has a police officer show him the spot where his parents had an accident with their car. Meanwhile, Carl arrives in Whitby after a few detours and hurries to a pub with a television set to watch the World Cup final between Italy and Brazil. Brazil finally becomes world champion and Carl cheers over Italy's defeat. Marco, on the other hand, who watched the game with Ellie in a hotel lobby, is frustrated and deeply disappointed. Carl finally meets Marco and Ellie again on the beach. He asks Ellie to come back to him. She, however, has had enough of Carl and Marco's ownership claims and runs to the port, where Marjorie takes her with her boat to Paris . Ellie wants to get started as a designer there. Carl and Marco run after her on the pier and try to get her to return, but Ellie just waves to them. She loves both and could not choose between them.
