Veterinarian and writer James Herriot's office was at Thirsk, 23 Kirkgate. After the practice moved to an industrial area, the building, which is close to the center, was converted into a museum.

Personalities

Accidents

  • On November 2, 1892, 5 km north of Thirsk, an express train collided with a freight train on the same track. The freight train had been brought forward because of a delayed express train, but then the switch keeper on duty briefly nodded off and cleared the way for the express train when he woke up without thinking about the freight train. 10 people were killed and 43 injured in the accident. The switchman was found guilty of manslaughter, but the sentence was suspended because he had no sleep for 36 hours because of his daughter, who was seriously ill the day before and who later died, and had asked in vain for a substitute for his shift.
  • On July 31, 1967, at Thirsk, an express train from London to Edinburgh ran into a freight train that had recently derailed from the siding, the driver of which had not yet had time to issue a warning. 7 people were killed and 45 injured.
