action

Several storylines are interwoven in the film. Although the main characters are fictional, their stories were adapted by eyewitnesses and victims of the natural disaster.

  • Ian and Susie Carter : The British Carter family is spending Christmas in Khao Lak with their six-year-old daughter Martha . While Ian looks after his daughter on the morning of December 26th, Susie goes on a diving trip. When the tsunami hits Ian and Martha with full force, the father loses sight of his daughter. He survives and goes in search of his relatives. In all the destruction and chaos, he finally finds the uninjured Susie, who had been safe for miles at sea during her dive. The search for their daughter together leaves Ian and Susie Carter and their marriage almost broken. In the meantime, Susie takes care of a foreign child of the same age who survived the disaster slightly injured, but later leaves it to the surviving mother. Their daughter Martha remains missing and the couple say goodbye to her a little later on the ruined beach of Khao Lak.
  • Nick Fraser and Chai : Nick Fraser, a reporter from England and his local photographer Chai, are sent to Thailand to write the story of their lives. Initially only press people who do their job, but they soon develop a human feeling for the catastrophe. With the help of the hotel owner Simone, they track down a government conspiracy, according to which an early warning system for tsunamis should have been set up in 1996. At that time, however, the responsible politician was dismissed in order to build new and more comfortable hotel facilities instead of the destroyed hotel complexes. The death of thousands of people was accepted with approval.
  • Peabody Family : Like Susie Carter, Brit Kim Peabody and her son Adam are on the diving trip. On the beach, her husband James and their eldest son John are separated from the wave. While James Peabody dies in a truck, John Peabody is recovered seriously injured. If he is not flown out to England quickly in order to receive adequate medical care, he will have to die, or in the best case his leg will be amputated. The unsettled mother believes the ongoing promises of the British ambassador on site, which guarantees a fast ambulance home. When this is available, Kim Peabody has already given her consent to the operation of her son, whose leg will then be amputated.
  • Tony Whittaker : The British Ambassador Tony Whittaker becomes the contact point for many people who seek help in an emergency. First of all, the typical example of a politician who makes promises and hopes to people, he too begins to understand that much more needs to be done here. He also becomes the point of contact for Kim Peabody and promises her to bring her son John to England. However, he does not succeed in putting his promise into practice in time.
  • Than : The 16-year-old Than works as a waiter in Khao Lak to look after his grandmother and his siblings. After the tsunami, the boy is the only survivor in his family who tries to rebuild his country. But a large corporation is planning to build a hotel complex from the destroyed village. In addition to the pain of personal loss, there is also anger and powerlessness.
