action

The life of handsome and adventurous Robin Cavendish takes a dramatic turn when he is diagnosed with polio .

Biographical background

As long as I breathe tells the life story of the Briton Robin Cavendish, who was born in Middleton in 1930. When he was diagnosed with polio at the age of 28, he was informed that he had only three months to live; later this was corrected to one year. Paralyzed from the neck down, he was dependent on a ventilator. Against the doctors' recommendations, Cavendish left the hospital after a year; he would outlive some of the experts who predicted his life would be short. Cavendish became a specialist in his illness and acted as an advisor to nurses himself. He worked as a lawyer and advocate for the disabled. He became one of the UK's longest survivors of the disease and is considered a medical sensation.

production

Directed by Andy Serkis , who made his directorial debut with this film. Serkis is actually known for his motion capture roles as an actor, such as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and as the ape Caesar in the 2011 remake of Planet of the Apes . The screenplay was written by William Nicholson . A first trailer was published at the end of June 2017. The score was composed by Nitin Sawhney ; the soundtrack, which includes 29 pieces of music, was released by Varese Sarabande on October 13, 2017.

The film premiered on September 10, 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival and opened the London Film Festival on October 4, 2017 . At the beginning of October 2017 he was presented at the Zurich Film Festival , where Andrew Garfield was honored with the Golden Eye Award. The film was released in US cinemas on October 13, 2017 and in the UK on October 27, 2017. The film was released in German cinemas on April 19, 2018.

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Benedikt Rabanus on behalf of Mo Synchron GmbH, Munich. Leonhard Mahlich lends his voice to Robin Cavendish in the German version, Sarah Riedel to his wife Diana.

reception

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved for ages 12 and up . The statement of reasons for the release states: “Overall, the film is told calmly; the story with its message about cohesion, self-determination and integration can be easily understood by children aged 12 and over. There are several dramatic and emotionally intense scenes in which the protagonist's life is in great danger. Viewers aged 12 and over are able to place these scenes in the context of the medical history and process them accordingly. The topic of euthanasia is also treated in a sensitive way that does not overwhelm children from the age of 12. "

Reviews

Sidney Schering of Oddsmeter.de says it should be noted in the film that Andy Serkis is close friends with producer Jonathan Cavendish , Robin and Diane Cavendish's son, and the director shows with palpable enthusiasm that the world is people like his parents and theirs He needs friends who don't just accept the limits, but rather say: "If a normal wheelchair with a ventilator connected is too difficult to push, then an electric wheelchair has to be invented!" Serkis uses the so-called Gilligan Cut several times , Schering continues form of audiovisual humor popularized by Gilligan's Island , in which a character portrays something as impossible, followed by a cut and the next one seen how it very well happens. Schering notes that while trying to live up to his intentions, Serkis stumbled upon the shallow characterization that William Nicholson's script had given the central pair of characters, and because the film was so busy exploring new stages in the life of the Cavendishs, there is hardly any room left for quieter passages in which the characters' personality is illuminated more deeply apart from their will to fight. The small contradictions in the characterization of the Cavendishs remained realistic, which is also due to the committed play of Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy , according to Schering, who are believable as a couple full of great feelings. Schering sums up: "With good intentions, this tragicomic case history is definitely worth a look for big fans of emotional cinema: Nicely photographed and played with fervor, As long as I breathe, his thin figure drawings are largely forgotten, even if the moodier passages sometimes seem overemphasized."

Awards

The film was longlisted for the Douglas Hickox Award at the 20th British Independent Film Awards in October 2017 . Jan Sewell was nominated for the best make-up and hair design there, Ian Wilson and Becki Ponting received a nomination for the best sound.
