Controversy about the Wörterseebühne

In 2003 Renato Zanella was appointed director of the festival on the Klagenfurt lake stage , which was to be founded on the initiative of Governor Jörg Haider . In his activity, which was initially contractually agreed for 3 years, Zanella was to establish Klagenfurt with the Wörtherseebühne as a festival city. In the 2004 season, Zanella, who until 2005 acted as a consultant under unclear circumstances, de facto acted as managing director of the operating company, according to witness statements before the investigative committee. Because free tickets worth € 880,000 were issued, the 2004 season was not very successful economically. Renato Zanella brought u. a. Tosca-amore disperato by Lucio Dalla and Spartacus in his own staging and choreography on the Wörtherseebühne, both productions were enthusiastically received by the premiere audience. The musical Tosca caused a loss of € 2,122,899, a federal subsidy planned for three years was used up in full in 2004: At the time of the review, the operating company had negative equity of € 1,247,899. The production of the musical "Napoleon" planned for 2005 was not implemented for economic reasons. As a result, there was criticism of the management of the Seebühne, who could not present a balance sheet, and requests to resign Zanella. After the loss of € 2.1 million in the 2004 season became known, the operating company of the floating stage was dissolved. By dissolving the operating company, an attempt was made to terminate the contract with Zanella. However, Zanella initially insisted on the continuation of his existing contract and agreed two weeks later to terminate it, regardless of the poor results he was responsible for in the 2004 season, but after paying a severance payment of allegedly € 180,000. to. In the course of 2005 the total of the known costs of the floating stage rose to € 3.9 million.

In a specially scheduled press conference by the chief public prosecutor Gottfried Kranz, it was announced that the controversy surrounding the Wörterseebühne did not involve any criminal offenses and that the proceedings against the near-director Zanella and the Seebühnen managing director Bernhard Sapetschnig had been discontinued.
