ImPulsTanz - Vienna International Dance Festival is a Viennese dance and performance festival that has been taking place since 1984 and is now the largest European dance festival for contemporary dance. The festival is held in July and August and lasts up to five weeks. In addition to dance performances from different countries, dance workshops are offered for those interested. The most important venues are the Burgtheater , its rehearsal stage in the Arsenal and the theater in Porzellangasse. More than 40 productions are now held annually in 10 venues and around 80 lecturers deal with around 3000 students in 160 workshops. During the festival, the Impulstanz Festival Lounge takes place every evening in the Burgtheater Vestibül, where you can dance to DJs and live concerts with free admission.

history

The first International Dance Weeks , as the festival was previously called, were organized in 1984 on the initiative of the cultural manager Karl Regensburger and the choreographer Ismael Ivo on the Schmelz . At that time, the event mainly had a workshop festival character. In 1988, four years after the founding year, it was expanded to a performance festival and proclaimed the ImPulsTanz Festival for the first time. Works by Wim Vandekeybus , Marie Chouinard and Mark Tompkins , who are loyal companions of the festival to this day, were shown. In 1996, the danceWeb-Europe project was also set up , a network of European dance institutes that supports and accompanies young artists.

In 2020 the festival was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
