Ismael Ivo (born January 17, 1955 in São Paulo ; died April 8, 2021 there ) was a Brazilian dancer and choreographer who worked for many years in Germany, Italy and Austria. Across all disciplines, Ivo moved between traditional modern dance , expressive dance and contemporary dance forms.

Life

Ivo was born in 1955 in the Vila Prudente district of the city of São Paulo and grew up in modest circumstances in the Vila Ema district. His mother, who worked as a domestic servant, was a single parent. Ivo became interested in dance at an early age and, thanks to various scholarships, managed to attend dance schools. He was accepted into the dance ensemble of the Teatro de Dança Galpão in São Paulo. Later, the choreographer Klauss Vianna invited him to join the Theatro Municipal's experimental dance group , where he stayed for a year.

After receiving several awards as the best solo dancer in São Paulo , he accepted Alvin Ailey's invitation in 1983 and became a member of the Alvin Ailey Dance Center in New York . In 1985 Ivo moved to Europe. Since then he has worked for over two decades with actors from the international dance, music and theater scene such as Johann Kresnik , George Tabori , Heiner Müller , Usiho Amagatsu , Mina Yoo , Yoshi Oida , Koffi Koko , Marcia Haydée and many others.

In 1984, Ismael Ivo and Karl Regensburger founded ImPulsTanz in Vienna, which has grown into the largest European dance festival . From 1996 to 2005 Ivo headed the dance theater of the German National Theater in Weimar , from 2005 to 2012 the dance section of the Venice Biennale . There he introduced the Golden Lion of the Biennale in the dance genre. In Italy he founded the training project “Contemporary Dance Research Center ARSENALE DELLA DANZA” in 2009, which was continued from 2013 in Vienna and São Paulo under the name “Biblioteca do Corpo”. In 2013 Ismael Ivo was visiting professor at the Max Reinhardt Seminar at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

From 2017 to 2020 Ismael Ivo was director of the Balé da Cidade de São Paulo. In November 2017 he was appointed co-director of the Theatro Municipal São Paulo, the most important theater and opera house in São Paulo, together with the conductor Roberto Minczuk . Ivo was a member of the jury of one of the world's largest dance competitions in Seoul , Korea (SIDC), and was a member of the advisory board of the Iwanson Sixt Foundation for Contemporary Dance . In autumn 2020 he became a consultant for the television channel TV Cultura.

Ivo suffered two strokes in 2020 from which he recovered. On April 8, 2021, Ivo died at the age of 66 of COVID-19 in the Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, where he had been hospitalized for over a month.
