The Droyziger Castle has its origins in a medieval castle, which was built at the beginning of the 13th century to secure an important road crossing point. The builder was Albert von Turt, who from 1190 had the name Albrecht von Droy says . In 1214 he founded a branch ( Commandery , later Provost ) of the Canons of the Holy Sepulcher (and not , as is sometimes wrongly represented, of the Knights Templar ). A branch of the order was in Utenbach west of the Saale. The Counts of Orlamünde then had their seat in the castle from 1344 until their extinction in 1413. From 1413 to 1622 Droyßig was owned by the von Bünau as a landgrave's fief , after which it passed to the von Hoym . The Order of St. John also had a commandery in Droyzut from around 1489.

The original plant is unique in Germany: surrounded by a moat arose a circular double wall ring feedforward adorn from the high evenly spaced six, narrow and elongated semi-circular towers far to the outside, while in the center of the plant, a round keep protruded having a wide view granted. A model can be seen on the municipality's website. The building was built on the model of oriental crusader castles . The entrance to the castle was a drawbridge, which led from the east between two towers into the courtyard.

With the invention and development of firearms, the castle gradually lost its importance as a defensive structure and the nobility strove for representative residences. The fundamental renovation to a Renaissance castle was carried out under Christian Julius von Hoym at the beginning of the 17th century. Since he had the new buildings built on the mighty outer walls of the castle, the original complex can still be seen today. The central round tower was removed. In 1622 the representative castle church was built in the moat.

Via Louise Countess von Hoym (* 1772), married Princess Reuss-Ebersdorf, the property came to the Reuss family in 1791 . In 1839 Prince Otto Victor I von Schönburg acquired the property, who bequeathed it to his younger son Prince Hugo (1822-1897). He was followed by his son Heinrich (1863–1945); his widow, Princess Adelheid von Schönburg-Waldenburg, born Princess zur Lippe-Biesterfeld (1884–1963), was expropriated in 1945 through the land reform .

Castle Church

Castle Church

The castle church is a building of national standing. It was built in 1622 after part of the former fortification was demolished over the former moat, but the interior was not completed.

The simple structure does not reveal the purpose of the building on the outside. The three storeys of windows rather follow the facade scheme of Renaissance palaces. Plastic forms, curved and blown window gables herald the approaching baroque. The stone carvings of the wall structure and gallery are of high quality. The church represents unadulterated North German-Dutch mannerism.

The imposing crypt with its basket arch vaults is located under the nave.

Bear kennel

Bear kennel

In 1852 Prince Hugo zu Schönburg-Waldenburg had a bear pen built in the moat. The offspring of the pair of bears living there were distributed to various zoos in Europe around the turn of the century. Until the Second World War , the kennel was a popular destination for both locals and tourists. From the beginning of the war until 1955 there were no bears in the kennel. Only in 1955 did a pair of bears move in again.

The last descendant of this pair of bears died in 1999. Since the kennel no longer met animal welfare requirements, no new bears could move in for the time being. An association founded in 1999 planned and implemented the renovation and new construction of the kennel between 1999 and 2003. In 2003 the new kennel, which now took up a large part of the castle moat and was fenced off with glass walls, was inaugurated. In the same year, the bears Toni and Aiko were housed in the new kennel, which now offers a bathing pool, natural flooring, several sleeping caves as well as play and exercise options on 470 m².

Until 1989 the central institute of the pioneer organization Ernst Thälmann (ZIPO) was located in the castle. A wedding room for the registry office has also been located here since 1978; many rooms in the castle itself are used by private residential units; the castle's cavalier house is now home to the community library of Droyßig and a restaurant for German-Spanish cuisine. Wine is pressed in the cellars of the castle. Community events, concerts and historical markets are held annually in the castle park. There is a forest stage in the castle park. Concerts, cabaret and theater events are held regularly in the castle church.
