An enclosure (also an animal enclosure or kennel ) is a fenced-off area that is used to accommodate animals. An enclosure can consist of a cage made of wire , wood or stone walling. Enclosures can delimit running animals, and cattle are commonly referred to as cattle gates or pens . Enclosures for flying birds are called aviaries .

Enclosures should prevent the animals from escaping into the surrounding area. Enclosures are created for different reasons. You can protect the animals living in it (for example from predatory game ). In other cases, the animals should be kept in the enclosed area so that they can be accessed at any time. There have been enclosures for hunting since the Middle Ages, such as the Saupark Springe . Today there are animal enclosures mainly in wildlife parks and zoos, where animals are shown for viewing. If the keeping is species-appropriate , animal enclosures are a good way for people from the city to become familiar with animals and their way of life.

Historical dog kennel

In Germany there is an animal welfare dog ordinance (so-called kennel ordinance). There the following is regulated in § 6 for keeping a kennel:

  • In a kennel, the dog must have the following unrestricted floor space available according to its height at the withers , whereby the length of each side must be at least twice the body length of the dog and no side may be shorter than two meters:
    • Height at withers up to 50 cm → floor area at least 6 m²
    • Height at withers from 50 to 65 cm → area at least 8 m²
    • Height at withers over 65 cm → area at least 10 m²
  • For each additional dog that is kept in the same kennel, half of the floor area specified for a dog is also required.
  • Notwithstanding the above requirements, the following applies:

Dogs that stay outside the kennel regularly (5 days a week for the greater part of the day) require an unrestricted usable kennel area of at least 6 m².

Since the dog house itself is deducted from the area , manufacturers recommend a kennel size of at least 8 m².

" Ball enclosure " is the name given to a pool filled with plastic balls the size of tennis balls, in which children can play. The gaps between the balls make it easy to breathe, even when hiding and “diving”. Ball enclosures can often be found in department stores or rest areas in the “children's paradise”.
