ORF 2 (until 1992: FS2 ) is the second television program of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) .

History and "Refreshment"

ORF 2 began broadcasting as a "technical test program" on September 11, 1961. It has been broadcast daily since September 1, 1970, previously only five days a week. Until October 26, 1992 the program was called FS2, then it was renamed to the current name ORF 2. The regionalized window programs under the title “State Today” were introduced on May 2, 1988 in all federal states simultaneously.

On January 9, 2012, similar to ORF eins , there was a complete design change, internally called "Refreshment". Based on the clear design of ORF Eins, a vertical navigation bar as a central on-air element should now also make it easier for viewers to orientate themselves to the program in ORF 2. The design should underline the strong Austrian identity of the station.

The color coding of the new design is entirely focused on red-white-red. This is visible in all animations - credits, idents, program information and trailers. The information is based on a two-part image, but only moves upwards or downwards: the date and time are displayed on the left, the program title on the right. In this way, more points of orientation are set for the viewers than before. a. the chronological navigation of the program information is emphasized more strongly and more clearly.

In 2018 it became known that the editorial offices of ORF one and ORF 2 will be separated. As a result, Matthias Schrom was appointed editor-in-chief of ORF 2, and Alexander Hofer became station director.

In contrast to ORF 1, ORF 2 broadcasts more Austria-related and cultural programs. The most important news program Zeit im Bild (ZIB) is broadcast several times a day , with ZIB 1 being the station's flagship at 7.30 p.m. ZIB 1 moderators are Tarek Leitner and Nadja Bernhard as well as Johannes Marlovits and Susanne Höggerl . ZIB 1 has a double moderation. At 7:00 p.m., nine regional window programs for each federal state are on the air with Bundesland heute (news for the federal states). In the broadcasting area of Tyrol and in South Tyrol , which belongs to Italy , the news program Südtirol is broadcast today from Monday to Friday at 6:30 p.m., which is produced in the ORF regional studio Tyrol in Innsbruck .

In addition, on Sundays at 1.30 p.m. in Burgenland there is the broadcast Dobar dan Hrvati for the Burgenland- Croat ethnic group and at the same time in Carinthia and Styria the broadcast Dober dan, Koroška and Dober dan, Štajerska for the Slovenian ethnic group in Carinthia and the Styria.

distribution

Broadcasts from all federal states can be received via satellite. Since the ORF only acquires the broadcasting rights for broadcasts in Austria, the program is broadcast encrypted via satellite. The decryption cards are only available for Austrian fee payers and may only be used in Austria. With the unencrypted, digital offer from ORF 2 Europe , interested parties abroad have been given the opportunity to receive ORF's own productions since July 2004. Many programs are also repeated in 3sat or even taken over directly by 3sat.

Since October 2006 the program has been broadcast terrestrially via DVB-T in Austria. The regional program of its own state as well as that of a neighboring state are broadcast nationwide via multiplex A.

In South Tyrol, the program can be received nationwide unencrypted via channel 34.

ORF 2 HD is the second Austrian television broadcaster to broadcast its programs in high definition . It is the HD simulcast version of ORF 2 and, like the SD mother station, is assigned to the public service program.

history

On December 2, 2009, an open HD test operation began with a trailer showing excerpts from nature and documentaries. The test offer was limited to households that had an activated Cryptoworks ORF registration. Three days later, on December 5, 2009 at midnight, regular broadcasting began. The ORF 2 program is broadcast in the high-resolution 720p format. Since only a few formats are available in high definition, many broadcasts are upscaled by Austrian radio .

Among the first broadcasts in 720p were the ORF Joseph Haydn's Il mondo della luna and Robert Dornhelm's opera adaptation La Bohème . The traditional Advent concert Christmas in Vienna and the New Year's concert 2010 under the direction of star conductor Georges Prêtre were also broadcast in HD. A short time later, all Universum productions began to be broadcast in native HD as well.

reception

Since July 1, 2009, the station can be received digitally via Astra. With the exception of the program variant ORF 2 Europe with the regional program for Vienna, the program is encrypted and requires an activated ORF digital SAT card .

  • Satellite: Astra 19.2 ° East
  • Downlink frequency: 11.303 GHz
  • Symbol rate (MS / s): 22000
  • Error protection (FEC): 2/3
  • Polarization: Horizontal
  • Modulation: 8PSK

Since August 2014, a test operation for the upcoming broadcast of regional programs in HD has been broadcast via Astra 19.2 ° East using the new transponder 5. From October 25, 2014, all “State Today” broadcasts will be transmitted in high definition via this transponder. Until now, it was only possible to receive “Wien heute” in HD via the only available ORF 2 HD stream. In addition, the programs ORF III HD and ORF SPORT + HD (also test mode) exist via this transponder.

In South Tyrol, Italy, the HD version of the station has been available unencrypted via DVB-T in a single- frequency network at a bit rate of around 10 Mbit / s since mid-2010 by the Südtirol Broadcasting Corporation (RAS). In order to be able to receive the station there, it is sufficient to have an MPEG-4 compatible television set.

In Austria, ORF 2 can be received terrestrially via SimpliTV as one of three free HD programs. According to the platform operator, the technical range should be 90 percent.

program

The proportion of HD material is now around 70% of the overall program, and the ZIB has also been broadcast in real HD since spring 2013.

During the regional exit, the regional program of ORF Vienna ("Vienna Today") will be shown on ORF 2 HD. As usual, the other 8 regional programs can be seen in parallel on the federal state channels.
