Blue Danube Radio (initially Ö3 International ) was an Austrian radio broadcaster based in Vienna , organized by ORF and financed by the Austrian federal government until the end of 1986 . It was set up in the summer of 1979 with the completion of the UNO-City as a local English-language program and broadcast on the FM frequency 102.5 MHz, with the music program focusing on easy-listening .

Like the ORF regional radio stations at the time, the station was initially only broadcast in mono and could only be received via FM in the Vienna area. In the rest of Germany, Blue Danube was only accessible via TV as an accompanying sound to the test image in the early years . Initially, a separate program was only broadcast for a few hours a day, the rest of the time was often taken over by Ö3 .

Some of the broadcasts were:

  • Continental Breakfast ("Morning Show")
  • Soft Sound Café
  • Casey Kasem ’s Top 40 (American Hit Parade)
  • Passport (language courses in English, French, Spanish ...)

From May 1992 the station could be received throughout Austria on the fourth radio frequency chain of the ORF, although its technical range has not been expanded since 1997. From the beginning of 1995 Blue Danube Radio shared the broadcasting time with FM4 until it was completely discontinued in February 2000 in favor of this station.

In FM4's program, however, there are still some elements such as English or French-language news, around half of the day is still moderated in English, as this ORF broadcasting chain still has to be “predominantly foreign-language” according to the law .
