Numerous programs were broadcast in many different languages, with a large regular audience around the world. The best-known formats included z. B .:

  • Austria Journal (several times a day)
  • Intermedia (since April 4, 1997, successor to the shortwave panorama , moderated by Wolf Harranth )
  • Federal state magazine

Retreat and end

Around the year 2000, the Federal Chancellery under the Schüssel government restricted the financing of the foreign service and the range of programs had to be cut. Some foreign language editorial offices also had to be closed.

In 2002, the Chancellery completely stopped payments. The ORF tried to continue the independent program with a new concept. In addition to a few remaining in-house productions, various programs from all areas of the ORF domestic service were broadcast. This affected many broadcasts from Ö1 , FM4 and even Ö3 . The ORF regional studios contributed folk music programs.

On March 26, 2003, the ORF Board of Trustees decided - against the protests of a number of listeners at home and abroad and of employees - to discontinue the independent broadcasting operations of Radio Austria International for financial reasons.

The transmission systems in Moosbrunn, which were only completely modernized at the end of 2000, are now largely rented to third-party radio stations.

Ö1 International

Main article: Ö1 International

After Radio Austria International ceased broadcasting, the national program Ö1 began to be broadcast worldwide via shortwave, albeit with a severely limited length and power. An old program element was retained - in shortened form - the English-language “Report from Austria”. It was broadcast on shortwave instead of the Ö1 program at various times until the end of 2008. According to an announcement on the station's website, the financing of the transmission systems was only secured until the end of 2009.

Other foreign language broadcasts on ORF

There are still some English-language program elements in the domestic radio program.

  • News in English at the end of the Ö1 lunch journal
  • Mostly English-speaking moderation on FM4

The French-language short messages in the morning on FM4 and at the end of the Ö1 lunch journal were discontinued at the beginning of January 2019.
