Tarek Leitner (born September 25, 1972 in Linz ) is an Austrian journalist and television presenter .

Life

Leitner graduated from the Kollegium Aloisianum in 1990 and began his journalistic career at the current service of the ORF -Landesstudios Oberösterreich, where he was responsible for radio information (including as head of the service) and television information ( Upper Austria today ). After completing a law degree as Mag. Iur. In 1997 he moved to Vienna as a domestic policy editor at Zeit im Bild ( ZIB ). He became known throughout Austria in 1999 with his live reports on the Galtür avalanche disaster . In 2001 Leitner was a correspondent in the ORF office in Brussels for several months . He then strengthened the team of moderators for the ZIB daily editions. Since 2004 he has moderated the short edition of the ZIB at 5:00 p.m., the ZIB 1 and the late edition of the ZIB . Occasionally he moderates ZIB 2 . The ZIB 1 he hosted since the re-introduction of the double moderation in April 2007 on the side of Danielle Spera . Since June 2010, when Spera moved to the Jewish Museum Vienna , he has moderated ZIB 1 alongside Marie-Claire Zimmermann and, since 2015, Nadja Bernhard .

Leitner is a lecturer at the Institute for Journalism at the University of Vienna and in the " Journalism and Public Relations " course at the FH Joanneum in Graz . In 2008 he was awarded a Romy as the most popular television presenter . In 2011 he again received the Romy in the category Most Popular Moderator / Information, this time together with his moderation partner Marie-Claire Zimmermann. At the Romy Awards 2017 he was awarded in the Information category.

In 2017 he moderated the ORF summer talks during the election campaign for the National Council election . His close personal relationship with Chancellor Christian Kern , who became known to the newspapers News and tv-media through his confirmation of a family vacation together in 2015 , caused criticism of Leitner's journalistic independence. According to information from the daily Die Presse, Christian Kern did not take part in a second family vacation together in Morocco in 2016 . The criticism of Leitner's alleged bias came mainly from ÖVP candidate Efgani Dönmez , but also from the FPÖ. The ORF rejected the criticism and emphasized Leitner's journalistic integrity. After the summer talks, ORF withdrew from him the moderation of the other planned TV duels for the election with the participation of Christian Kern.

From February 2018 to April 2018, Tarek Leitner (on behalf of Claudia Reiterer ) also moderated the discussion program Im Zentrum .

Tarek Leitner has two daughters and is married to Claudia Lahnsteiner, the office manager of ORF program director Kathrin Zechner .
