John Moresby

John Moresby (born March 15, 1830 , Allerford / Somerset , England ; † July 12, 1922 , Fareham / Hampshire , England) was a British naval officer who explored the coast of New Guinea and discovered the area on which the city named after him was located Port Moresby (today's capital of Papua New Guinea ) is located. In his career in the Royal Navy he rose to the Rear Admiral ( rear admiral ).

He was the son of Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby . He was married and had six children. His eldest daughter, Elizabeth Louisa Moresby , became a writer using various pseudonyms.
